“Running is my escapism”: 27-year-old brain tumour survivor to take on half marathon one year on from life-saving surgery

Rebecca, a 27-year-old financial worker from Jersey, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2019, just one month after marrying the love of her life at her dream wedding.

On their honeymoon Rebecca began to experience problems with her eyesight, including double vision and upon returning home began to become confused and disorientated. On 25th September 2019, she was flown to Southampton hospital to have emergency brain surgery to drain the fluid build-up in her brain caused by an undiagnosed brain tumour. The surgery saved her life.

Now, over one year on, Rebecca is training to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon in October 2021, for The Brain Tumour Charity, to raise vital funds and awareness to help others affected by this devastating disease.

"I know I’m incredibly lucky to be here, living my life without limits and able to take on this challenge. For every individual who is not so lucky and for everyone who has been lost, I’m dedicated to conquering the Royal Parks Half Marathon, to raise money and help beat brain tumours sooner."

Having been cleared to start running again by doctors, Rebecca has re-discovered her love for lacing up her trainers.

“Running is my escapism. It’s my time to put my headphones in and switch off from the rest of the world and what’s happening. It helps me to feel strong and calm. Running has honestly helped me so much.”

“I just hope we can keep raising money and awareness about brain tumours because before I was diagnosed, I never would have believed that it could have affected me.”

A spokesperson for The Brain Tumour Charity added: “Rebecca's story brings hope to others who have been affected, not only by a brain tumour, but by a sudden life changing event. Her strength of character to bounce back and take on this challenge, and desire to share her story with others to raise vital awareness and ultimately hope, means we believe she is a perfect candidate for your inspire series. Rebecca's story shows that these events do not have define you and that anything is possible. She is an inspiration to all of us at The Brin Tumour Charity.”
