Race Day: 09 October 2022

Sophie Guse, 33, from Purley, will be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon on Sunday 10th October in aid of supporting the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at St Georges hospital, where she works as a nurse.

Sophie has been a PICU nurse for over eleven years now: “I strived to work in the PICU unit. Since joining the unit, it has very much been my home and means an awful lot to me.”

Her most recent role in the unit is within the Wellbeing team, she explains why the job hasn’t been the easiest during the past year, as well as the new initiatives she’s helped implement:

“Due to COVID the working year has not been the easiest. Our turnover is the highest it’s ever been, and our patient load is always increasing, giving our team very little respite.”

She continues: “It’s been a difficult year to maintain and encourage happiness across the unit. However, our team has worked exceptionally hard. Through this role I’ve initiated well-being study days, random acts of kindness across the unit, and ‘Nothing but Niceness’ unit WhatsApp group.”

When describing the team’s morale, Sophie states: “Through the dark clouds, the silver linings of working with new friends and colleagues was certainly humbling. It was a time that many of us will never forget.”

For the last few months, Sophie has been training for the Royal Parks Half Marathon and is set to take on the challenge which is less than a month away now.

She discusses the motivation behind signing up: “Not only did I want to raise money in aid of the PICU unit, but also to help us focus on something positive. There is a great team of wonderful humans running the half marathon, who’ve made me so proud to work alongside. Hester, Hattie, Helen, Chloe and Grace – such special people!”

When discussing the time she aims to complete the half marathon in, Sophie states: “I completed the Royal Parks Half back in 2011, with a time of 2:03 - so perhaps we’ll see how I get on this time!”
