Record numbers participated today in the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon, plus the 50km Ultra, launched this morning, in partnership with Scope.
Over 12,500 runners from 30 countries turned out to race through the capital’s historic green spaces, keen to experience the most beautiful city run in the world. The Half Marathon has raised more than £11million for 365 different partner charities in its first four years, and this year will significantly boost that total. It is the UK’s second biggest fundraising event on Virgin Money Giving.
The multi-award-winning team behind the running series works all year round to create the unique distance-running experiences that combine iconic London landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, the Royal Albert Hall and the Houses of Parliament, with five of the eight beautiful Royal Parks.
The 50km Ultra, developed by The Royal Parks Foundation in partnership with Scope, shows the same smart logistics and planning that has made the half marathon a sell-out event. This thrilling challenge took runners on a picturesque route through London, winding its way along Thames tow paths, across south west London and through Richmond Park, to finish in Bushy Park, Henry VIII’s old hunting ground near Hampton Court.
Young people also played their part, with Pulse3K, a 3km run through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens for 11-16 year olds. Nearly 500 young people raced past the Royal Albert Hall to finish to the cheers of the crowds gathered on South Carriage Drive, where they were rewarded with unique wooden medals and refreshed with water and Fairtrade bananas.

In this momentous year of sport, we’re particularly pleased to have developed the 50km Ultra, a new challenge for athletes looking to take their running to the next level. It has been an amazing day of achievement for all involved, raising millions for hundreds of fantastic charities.”
